Crowdfunding: platforms, presales & tricks

Structure the campaign as ticket presale, not charity. Set the goal from your fixed-cost floor after venue and licensor quotes — plus fees and contingency. Launch with ~30% already committed.

Platform options

Kickstarter

Strong fit
Fees
~8–10% all-in (5% platform + processing + per-pledge)
Model
All-or-nothing
Fit for marathons
Best fit: if you miss the goal you are not on the hook for licensing MGs. Strong film-community reward culture.

GoFundMe

Fees
2.9% + $0.30 per donation (lower for verified charities)
Model
Keep what you raise
Fit for marathons
Cheapest; donation-framed. Strong when a nonprofit is your fiscal partner.

Indiegogo

Fees
~5% + ~3% processing
Model
All-or-nothing
Fit for marathons
Less differentiated from Kickstarter for new campaigns.

Direct presale ticketing

Strong fit
Fees
Ticketing fees only
Model

Fit for marathons
Often best: presold tickets are funding with no reward fulfillment burden.

Tips that actually move pledges

Frame as presale, not charity

"Back this and your ticket is your reward" converts better than a pure appeal.

Set the goal from real numbers

Fixed-cost floor + platform fees + taxes + contingency — never your dream budget.

Launch with momentum

30 days max. Have ~30% committed from sponsors and friends before you go live.

All-or-nothing protects you

If licensing money is not raised, you should not pay MGs or sign film contracts.

Poster art pays twice

Commission original art for marketing and as a high-tier reward you fully own.

Sponsors before the public

Sponsor dollars are cheaper to raise and come with built-in audience reach.

Reward tiers that work

  • $5Name in the program
  • $18Single-block ticket
  • $40All-day pass
  • $65Pass + screen-printed poster
  • $120Pass + poster + reception + reserved seat
  • $300"Presented by" on-screen and in marketing
  • $750–1,500Sponsor tier — logo, block of tickets

Do not offer

  • International shipping-heavy perks
  • Anything using studio artwork or characters (trademark risk)
  • Perks requiring studio approval

Sponsor levels (pre-campaign)

Raise these in weeks 5–7; they seed the 30% launch momentum.

$250 — Supporting

Logo on program and event page, stage mention, 2 passes

$500 — Presenting Partner

Logo on poster and on-screen, lobby table, 4 passes

$1,500 — Title Sponsor

"Presented by" on all marketing, on-screen credit, lobby presence, 10 passes, first refusal on next event

Budget floor (build your goal here)

Illustrative: 200 seats, 12 hours, five films — confirm locally.

Open the interactive budget model → Import/export CSV, break-even, scenarios, and crowdfunding goal (same logic as the spreadsheet).

Line itemLowLikelyHigh
Venue four-wall (12 hrs)$1,200$2,800$6,000
Projectionist / tech$0$400$900
Film licenses (5 titles, MG)$750$1,500$3,000
DCP shipping / handling$100$250$600
Event insurance$150$300$600
Ticketing fees$0$250$500
Marketing$200$700$2,000
Contingency (15%)$360$1,000$2,400
Total$2,760$7,700$18,500

At 200 seats × $35 pass: 60% house ≈ $4,200; sellout ≈ $7,000 — usually not enough alone at the “likely” cost tier. Hence presales, sponsors, and tiered passes.

Pitfalls to avoid

Financial

  • Goal omitting platform fees, taxes, and contingency
  • Forgetting F&B minimum on chain rentals (can be four figures)
  • Break-even requiring near-sellout
  • Paying MGs before funding clears

Legal / marketing

  • Advertising titles before licenses are signed
  • Using studio key art without permission
