Venue scout · October 2026

Independent theaters within 3 hours of Fuquay-Varina

Drive times, DCP fit ratings, rental terms, and contacts — researched for a full-day Hammer Horror marathon (five films, ~11 am–10 pm). Companion to the planning playbook.

Independent Theaters Within Three Hours of Fuquay-Varina (27526)

A venue-scouting guide for the all-day Hammer Horror marathon (five films, 474 minutes of runtime, roughly 11 am to 10 pm with breaks). Researched October 14, 2026. A companion to the All-Day Movie Marathon: Planning Playbook.

How to read this guide

  • Drive times are approximate estimates from Fuquay-Varina by the most direct highway route. Check them in your maps app before committing.
  • "DCP" means the theater can play a Digital Cinema Package, the hard-drive format Rialto ships restored Hammer titles in. A venue that can only play DVDs, Blu-rays, or a video projector cannot show a licensed DCP.
  • Fit rates each venue for this event: a full Saturday or Sunday, 150–400 seats, DCP playback, and a horror-friendly audience.
    • ★★★ = strong fit, call first
    • ★★ = workable with conditions
    • ★ = backup, or for a smaller spin-off event
    • ✕ = not suitable for a licensed DCP marathon

Shortlist — call these five first

Rank Theater Why
1 Carolina Theatre of Durham Confirmed DCP playback, with a GDC server and NEC digital cinema projectors in both cinemas, plus 35mm in Cinema One (Carolina Theatre tech packet). Its 226-seat Cinema One is the right size (Carolina Theatre), and the Nevermore horror festival has already built an audience (Carolina Theatre).
2 The Rialto, Raleigh 550 seats (Cinema Treasures). Its October 2026 calendar is full of repertory horror at $11 a ticket: The Thing, Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, and weekly Rocky Horror (The Rialto). The audience already exists.
3 CAMEO Art House Theatre, Fayetteville 125-seat main house plus a 38-seat loge. Nonprofit rental discounts, and a published screening-sponsorship model (CAMEO).
4 The Cary Theater Closest to you, town-run, and it publishes its rates (Cary rental guide). Rentals are limited to weekdays, so pitch it as a co-programmed public event instead.
5 Thalian Hall, Wilmington 550-seat main stage with a digital film projection system and a running cinema series (Thalian Hall, Thalian Hall Cinema). A strong second-city repeat for the same program.

Benchmark: Aurora Cineplex (outside the radius)

You already have a working relationship with Aurora Cineplex in Roswell, Georgia (Aurora Cineplex), and they give you discounts. At about six hours from Fuquay-Varina it's outside this search, but it's useful in two ways:

  1. Negotiating anchor. Ask Aurora for their all-day rate and your discount in writing. When a North Carolina theater quotes you, you can say, "My current partner venue does a full day for $X. Can you get close?"
  2. Fallback or second stop. If no venue near you can give you a full weekend day, you could run the event at Aurora. You could also make it a two-city tour: the same licensed program in North Carolina one weekend and Roswell the next. That spreads the cost of shipping the DCP drives and producing the marketing across two events. Each screening needs its own license and play date, so tell Rialto about both cities up front.

Questions to ask every theater

  1. Can you play a DCP, and can you ingest an encrypted DCP with a KDM (the unlock key) from the distributor? What server model do you have?
  2. Is a full Saturday or Sunday available, from 10 am to 11 pm, without other public shows?
  3. Do you offer a flat day rate or four-wall rate, and what does it include: projectionist, house manager, ushers, cleaning?
  4. Who sells tickets? Do you take a fee or a percentage?
  5. Concessions: who keeps the revenue, and can sponsors sample product or set up a lobby table?
  6. Do you require certificate of insurance coverage, and at what limits?
  7. Can you project at 1.85:1 correctly, with masking, for all five Hammer titles?
  8. Do you have a nonprofit or co-presentation rate? Many on this list do, including CAMEO (CAMEO) and the Independent Picture House (IPH).
  9. What's the deadline for delivering media? IPH wants it three weeks out (IPH).
  10. Will you promote the event to your mailing list? Some venues, such as The Nick, explicitly do not (The Nick).

Pitfalls specific to these venues

  • Weekday-only rental rules rule out the Cary Theater (Cary Theater), the Gem (Gem Theatre), and The Nick (The Nick) for a weekend marathon. A co-presentation is the only way around that.
  • No DCP, no show. Graham Cinema plays only DVDs or its own films (Graham Cinema), and the Paramount lists only a video projector (Paramount). Neither can play the Rialto files.
  • Hourly rates add up. A 12-hour Saturday at IPH's Auditorium 4 rate is $7,080 (IPH). Always ask for a day rate.
  • Old prices. The Rialto's $200 price is from a 2020 news story (ABC11), before the 2023 ownership change (Visit Raleigh). The Cary rates come from its FY2021 guide. Get current quotes.
  • Third-party listings. The Varsity's prices come from Eventective, not the theater (Eventective). Confirm them by phone.
  • Big rooms look empty. Fletcher Hall (1,108), Greensboro's auditorium (1,130), and the Byrd (936) are spectacular, but 150 people in a 1,000-seat room feels like a failure. For a first event, a 200–550-seat house fits better.

Suggested outreach order

  1. This week: email Carolina Theatre of Durham rentals and contact the Rialto. Both are within 45 minutes and DCP-capable or programming horror now.
  2. Same week: email CAMEO about a co-presentation or nonprofit rate.
  3. Week 2: call the Cary Theater about a co-programmed public event; call Thalian Hall about a Wilmington repeat.
  4. Week 2: get Aurora Cineplex's all-day rate in writing to use as your negotiating benchmark.
  5. Log every quote in the Contact Tracker tab of the budget workbook, and update the venue line in the Cost Budget tab once you have real numbers. Use the interactive budget model on this site for CSV import/export.
